You'll spot majestic horses and cattle on the property, and guests are even able to bring their own horse and utilise the cross country jumps at the paddock adjacent the cottage.
During our stay, we barely left the house (because why would we?!)
I just stayed two nights at Merilli1885 with some girlfriends for a much-needed ‘mum-cation,’ and I can honestly say it’s one of the best experiences I’ve ever had! From the moment you walk in, you can feel the love and care that’s gone into restoring this beautiful old cottage. It’s full of history and charm, but with every modern luxury and thoughtful touch you could ever want. Every detail has clearly been chosen to maximise guest comfort and create a truly high-end experience. And while we knew from the photos it was going to be stunning, it’s even more spectacular in real life. We happened to visit during one of the rainiest weekends on record… which only made it better! We spent hours in our robes, curled up by the most incredible fireplace, eating cheese, drinking wine and watching the rain roll over the hills. We had to keep pinching ourselves! We felt like queens in the super comfy beds and loved the added luxuries in the bathrooms — heated towel rails, heat lamps, luxe body products, and bath salts for a relaxing soak in the tub. During our stay, we barely left the house (because why would we?!), except for a quick trip to the supermarket in Goolwa and a little wander to say hi to the resident horses. A chestnut called Whiskey gave us the warmest welcome (and totally stole our hearts). We left feeling relaxed, recharged and utterly spoiled. Cannot recommend Merilli1885 highly enough! Merilli1885 is a "must-have" experience not to be missed.
Merilli1885 is a "must-have" experience not to be missed. We stayed 3 nights using a "Coast is Calling" voucher. From the moment we entered the property we had a sense of beauty and delight - like opening a Treasure-trove and wondering with each piece "Whatever else is to be found!?" The views in all directions are stunning and constantly changing. We enjoyed sumptuous breakfasts on the veranda as we listened to and watched the birds - sometimes accompanied by Mozart. Mother Duck bravely led her fifteen new hatchlings down to the dam as 3 red kangaroos and a sneaky fox watched on from afar! Merilli is presented in its entirety with love and generosity and will only delight guests who are made to feel so very welcome. Unforgettable and beyond words! All things bright and beautiful.... Stepping into Merilli1885 is like stepping into a timeless sanctuary
Nestled among the rolling hills of Currency Creek, just over an hour from Adelaide, Merilli1885 offers more than just a getaway, it promises a soulful retreat into heritage, elegance, and equine-inspired serenity. Set on the picturesque Fleurieu Peninsula, this meticulously restored 19th-century stone cottage is the vision of Sophie and Richard Mintz, who have breathed new life into the once-dilapidated farmhouse. Their passion for refined design and heartfelt hospitality is evident in every corner of the home, where rustic charm is elevated by sophisticated touches and thoughtful details. Stepping into Merilli1885 is like stepping into a timeless sanctuary. Antique furnishings and Persian rugs echo its historic roots, while French linens, a crackling wood fireplace, and hand-selected designer accents bring an air of quiet luxury. It’s this seamless blend of old and new that makes the cottage both comforting and compelling, a space that feels both deeply lived-in and freshly indulgent. But what truly sets Merilli1885 apart is its rare offering for equestrian enthusiasts. This isn’t just a boutique stay; it’s an experience tailored for those who live and breathe horses. With private paddocks, an Olympic-sized arena, cross-country jumps, and showjumping equipment, guests are invited to bring their horses along and immerse themselves in the property’s bespoke equine facilities. Whether training, exploring, or simply relaxing alongside your horse, Merilli1885 offers a horse-holiday like no other. And yet, you don’t have to be a rider to fall under Merilli1885’s spell. Designed equally for romantic weekends, girls’ getaways, or serene solo escapes, the retreat’s appeal lies in its ability to slow time. Wake to the sight of mist-draped pastures, enjoy long mornings with coffee by the fire, then venture out to explore the best of the Fleurieu’s wine country, coastal charm, and artful small towns, all just a short drive away. The cottage officially opened its doors in May after an overwhelming pre-launch response in April. Early guests have already begun singing its praises, drawn to its unique blend of seclusion, story, and sophistication. “We aimed to create a space where guests could completely unwind, where every comfort is considered, and the surrounding landscape invites you to just… be,” says Sophie Mintz. Merilli1885 is more than a place to stay, it’s a reminder of what travel can feel like when heritage is honoured and hospitality is personal. It’s for those who want to escape the rush, reconnect with nature, or rediscover the romance of the countryside, whether on two legs or four hooves.

Merilli1885 was by far the best accommodation we have stayed at.
Merilli1885 was by far the best accommodation we have stayed at. Sophie should be very proud of what she has accomplished, the quality of the build to finer details all exudes luxury. The farm is a slice of county heaven from the typical red brick entry gates and rolling laneway leading to main homestead, which surrounded by gum studded paddocks filled with Black Angus cattle. We were lucky enough to be informed that we could gain early access and was greeted by Sophie and her three dogs. Once at Merlli1885 the smiles really started as it just fills you with warmth (plus heating was on in preparation) furnished beautifully, all areas were generous in size but still had a cozy feel. All rooms have great views to the surrounding paddocks, and once the magnificent French fireplace was lite the ambiance of what Sophie has built really showed. Lighting all dimmable, night lights in bathrooms, bathroom products of high quality and well supplied kitchen to make use of the best oven ever. Rating, 5 stars
